“Maestro looks back with reverence on the multicultural, mostly gay underground dance movement in New York that coalesced in the early 1970's. Out of that movement, which flowered in private clubs like the Loft and Paradise Garage, evolved the 12-inch single, remixes and the late-70's disco craze, and later the international rave culture. This documentary, is not a conventional history of dance pop so much as a eulogy for Larry Levan, the principal disc jockey at Paradise Garage, the club that closed in 1987 after 13 years. By then the AIDS epidemic had seriously ravaged the club scene; Levan succumbed to complications from AIDS in 1992. This film gives almost as much credit for the creation of the scene to David Mancuso, the founder of the Loft, the long-running private club famous for its intimate, living-room atmosphere and brilliant sound engineering.”

Desse movimento, que floresceu em clubes privados como o Loft and Paradise Garage, evoluiu o single de 12 polegadas, os remixes e a loucura da discoteca do final dos anos 70, e mais tarde a cultura da rave internacional. Este documentário, não é uma história convencional de dança pop, mas sim um elogio a Larry Levan, o principal DJ da Paradise Garage, o clube que fechou em 1987 após 13 anos. Nessa altura, a epidemia de SIDA tinha assolado seriamente a cena do clube; Levan sucumbiu às complicações da SIDA em 1992.
