“The various crises that have marked these first decades of the 21st century, such as the climate crisis, the migration crisis, wars, the loss of a sense of common ground, the depletion of the planet's resources and a serious mental health crisis, have been the basis for the thematic construction of the latest editions of FITEI. These great warning signs for humans and non-humans helped us build the theme for the last biennium - Trauma and Bravery - to which we finally added the word Phantasmagoria.
Because we believe that these thematic axes are not exhausted, FITEI 48 has as its title and thematic driving force Spectres, Eros and Sacrifice - Our Unthought. "Our Unthought" is a concept present in the work of Eduardo Lourenço when he refers to five hundred years of Portuguese colonialism. This spectral dimension marks the resentment and the sacrificial desire. At a time when we are talking about debt and reparations, FITEI, as a privileged space for dialogue between the former Iberian colonising powers and the global South, takes on the magical and ritualised dimension
that many of these issues raise. Through the image of Prospero and Caliban, characters from Shakespeare's Tempest, Eduardo Lourenço marks the complex of coloniser and colonised. In a universe that is constantly changing, on this trans planet, as Paul B. Preciado says, at a time when it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, recalling Mark Fisher, Jameson or Zizek, it is particularly important for us to present works that can reflect on how not to lose our memory, on the non-human, on the madness of love, on death and illusion, on whispers and the impossible.
We have tried to find in the artists we have been accompanying the traces that the present has left on them. As has been our habit in recent years, the theme we will be working on will be closely linked to the artists' work. FITEI stands out in the world of national and international festivals for its work in the real and imaginary Atlantic Triangle of Europe, Africa and America. While maintaining the stamp of Iberian Expression, in recent years it has been particularly interested in artists from the diaspora of these three territories, thus broadening what is meant by Iberian
Expression. In the new edition, we will once again focus on new dramaturgies and authors' scenic languages.
In this edition we present 16 shows, 10 Portuguese and 6 international, 6 Portuguese
premieres and 4 absolute premieres, many of which are the result of our co- productions and artistic residencies in the context of FITEI. We will continue with our sections Isto não é uma escola FITEI, FITEI aberto, Residências Artísticas FITEI, O FITEI e as escolas do Porto and FITEI PRO, resulting in a significant number of parallel activities.

“As diversas crises que têm assolado estas primeiras décadas do séc. XXI, como a crise climática, a das migrações, as guerras, a perda do sentido do comum, o esgotamento dos recursos do planeta em paralelo com uma grave crise de saúde mental, têm constituído a base para a construção temática das últimas edições do FITEI. Estes enormes sinais de alerta para o humano e o não-humano ajudaram-nos a construir o tema do último biénio, Trauma e Bravura, a que acabámos por juntar a palavra Fantasmagorias.
Porque entendemos que estes eixos temáticos não estão esgotados, o FITEI 48 tem como título e motor temático Espectros, Eros e Sacrifício – Nosso impensado. O “nosso impensado” é um conceito presente na obra de Eduardo Lourenço, quando se refere a quinhentos anos de colonialismo português. Esta dimensão espectral marca o ressentimento e o desejo sacrificial. Num tempo em que se fala de dívida e reparação, o FITEI, como lugar privilegiado de diálogo entre as antigas potências colonizadoras ibéricas e o sul global, assume a dimensão mágica e ritualizada que muitas destas questões levantam. Apresentando a imagem de Próspero e Caliban, personagens da Tempestade de Shakespeare, Eduardo Lourenço, marca assim o complexo do colonizador e do colonizado. Num universo em constante transformação, neste planeta trans, como refere Paul B Preciado, num tempo em que é mais fácil imaginar o fim do mundo que o fim do capitalismo, recuperando Mark Fisher, Jameson, ou Zizek, é particularmente importante para nós apresentar obras que possam refletir sobre a forma como não perdemos a memória, sobre o não-humano, sobre a loucura do amor, sobre a morte e a ilusão, sobre o sussurro e o impossível.
Procurámos encontrar nos artistas que têm sido acompanhados por nós as marcas que o tempo presente tem deixado neles. Como tem sido hábito nos últimos anos, o tema que trabalharemos acontece em estreita observância do trabalho dos artistas. O FITEI destaca-se no universo dos Festivais nacionais e internacionais, por trabalhar no triângulo atlântico, real e imaginário, de Europa, África e América. Mantendo o cunho da Expressão Ibérica, tem nos últimos anos estado particularmente interessado nos artistas da diáspora destes três territórios, expandindo assim o que se entende por Expressão Ibérica. Mais uma vez, numa nova edição, o nosso foco principal será nas novas dramaturgias, e nas linguagens cénicas de autor.
Nesta edição apresentaremos 16 espetáculos, 10 nacionais e 6 internacionais, 6 estreias nacionais e 4 absolutas, muitos destes espetáculos resultantes de coproduções nossas e residências artísticas em contexto FITEI. A 48ª edição do FITEI, desenrolar-se-á entre Porto, Matosinhos, Vila Nova de Gaia eViana do Castelo, a que este ano se junta Monção. Preparemo-nos todos para que as próximas semanas sejam de Espectros, Eros e Sacrifício.”
